A rainforest themed rave will be held by the Students Promoting Environmental Action in Knoxville organization as part of its annual Sustainability Week. The event will be located at 1708 Highland Ave. on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10:30 p.m.

When the clock strikes midnight, all electricity will be turned off, and there will be a glow-in-the-dark drum circle that will be playing acoustic music. A table explaining climate change will be set-up on the front porch of the house. The duration of the event will be three hours and 50 minutes.

The table at the event will have boards about the planetary carbon cycle and greenhouse gases, which will also be displayed on campus Thursday, according to Leslie Agron, who is a member of Democracy for East Tennessee from Oak Ridge.

Since we're in a pivotal time with our new president, Barack Obama, we have a great opportunity to become leaders in the international community on climate change. Mechelle Kneidinger, S.P.E.A.K. member

Mechelle Kneidinger, a member of S.P.E.A.K., explained that the 350 rave event is designed to raise awareness about global warming. The safe level of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere is 350 parts per million. Currently, the earth's atmosphere contains 390 parts per million of carbon dioxide.

"Since we're in a pivotal time with our new president, Barack Obama, we have a great opportunity to become leaders in the international community on climate change," Kneidinger said.

Leaders from countries around the world will be meeting in Copenhagen in December to decide what to do beyond the Kyoto Protocol of 1997 that proposed a plan to take steps toward resolving global warming. At this meeting, the leaders will also be making international climate negotiations, according to Kneidinger.

The rave event is going to be held in collaboration with the global 350 organization. A total of 162 countries will be participating in this effort to educate people about global warming.

Thirty pictures are going to be picked from groups participating in the 350 effort and will be shown on a big screen in Times Square in New York City as this global event unfolds. An aerial photo will be taken of Nashville students forming the numbers three, five and zero.

Sustainability Week, which began on Monday, dedicates each day of the week to a different environmental issue.

"Sustainability week is an annual event," Reagan Richmond, senior member and former president, said. "It is engineered to raise awareness about environmental issues in our community and around the world."

The University of Alabama Environmental Council will be holding a sustainability tailgating event before the Tennessee versus Alabama football game on Saturday. The tailgate will offer vegetarian food options, games to play and education tables, according to Daniel Marberry, a senior U.A.E.C. member.

The U.A.E.C. will also be holding a parallel 350 rave Saturday night, Kneidinger said.

S.P.E.A.K. is competing with U.A.E.C. to see which organization can get the most postcards signed by students. These postcards will be sent to senators in the surrounding areas and will contain information about the 350 organization and its purpose.

On Meat Management Monday, the kick-off day of Sustainability Week, vegetarian hotdogs and hamburgers were handed out to UT students. Stephen Holland, co-president of S.P.E.A.K., estimated that twenty-five to thirty pounds of meat were saved because of this event.

"Burning our Future," a movie about coal, was played and free pizza was offered to students in Hodges Library on Tuesday. Reusable grocery bags and sample cookbooks were also handed out on the pedestrian walkway.
