After a rainy night at Regal Soccer Stadium, the Lady Vols stormed to victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs 3-0.
Chelsea Thatcher set the tone early with a blast outside the 18-yard box in the 14th minute that went into the upper right corner of the net to set the score 1-0.
The Bulldogs would attack several times but come away with nothing, as the score at halftime remained a 1-0 in favor of the orange.
State did not have many chances throughout the game, and when they did have a breakaway or a shot, the Lady Vols' defense stood stout and held strong.
In the 20th minute, the ball ricocheted off goalie Molly Baird's hands and was left in front of the net. Luckily for the Lady Vols, Grace Cuenin was there to clear it away.
The Bulldogs had another opportunity squander away; midway through the first half Tara Henderson received a through ball from her teammates and was one-on-one with the goalie Baird. Baird won that matchup as she slid into the ball to force it out of bounds.
Rain caused a 50-minute rain delay at halftime, but Coach Kelly must have said something to the Lady Vols at the break, as it seemed they came out with more intensity and a sense of urgency in the second half.
Seven minutes in, Mick Ingram cracked a ball 20 yards out that sailed right under the goalies hands into the lower left corner of the net.
That was the spark that UT needed as five minutes later in the 57th minute, Mick Ingram struck again with her second goal of the game. This put the game out of reach and gave the Lady Vols that extra insurance goal and the 3-0 win.
The Lady Vols host Ole Miss on Sunday at 3 p.m. on ESPNU.
