Journalism professor Jim Stovall discussed the importance of the Web's immediacy to a group of students Thursday night and emphasized how students can follow a Nutshell format to get information on the site as soon as possible.

  • Professor Stovall has developed what he calls a Nutshell format for TNJN that will guide student-reporters in writing their stories by having them upload information to the site before they cover the event.
  • It's important for reporters to gather as many facts, links, documents, etc. ahead of time and think about what photos they are going to use.
  • In many cases, reporters can write about an event while they are covering the event.

The TNJN Nutshell is a standard way to get news on the site as quickly as possible. It consists of:

  • headline
  • summary
  • lead paragraph
  • three bullet points about the story (preferably in complete sentences)
  • explanatory paragraph after the bullet points (optional)

Jim Stovall has served as the faculty adviser to TNJN since its inception in October 2006.
