Imagine thousands of screaming girls and boys yelling your name. That is exactly what happened on Tuesday night when New Moon stars Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart rolled up to the Regal Cinemas Pinnacle in Turkey Creek for Knoxville's own red-carpet premiere.
Variety, the host for the premiere, is a children's philanthropic organization that has raised more than $1.5 million globally. Each year, Variety chapters host special events such as radiothons, black tie dinners and golf outings.
In past years, the East Tennessee Variety chapter has hosted three movie premieres including The Dukes of Hazzard, Good Luck Chuck and Journey to the Center of the Earth.
However, this year's New Moon premiere has been the most successful. According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, Variety raised more than $440,000 in ticket sales.
I'm really excited for you guys to see the movie. We put a lot of hard work into it, and I really think you're going to enjoy it. Taylor Lautner, 'New Moon' star
With such famous stars attached, it is no wonder that the New Moon event was quickly sold out. Buyers were placed in a lottery and lucky winners could purchase tickets for $100 each.
While waiting patiently for the stars to arrive, ticket holders played Twilight trivia in the lobby. Other fans surrounded the theater toting signs, books and New Moon posters eagerly hoping to catch a glimpse of Stewart and Lautner.
Some "twi-hards" fans drove from Michigan, Georgia and North Carolina just for the movie premiere.
Because of a delay, Stewart and Lautner arrived nearly an hour after their scheduled appearance. But as soon as they exited their cars, they graciously signed autographs and took photos before being ushered into the packed theater.
Following the press photos and signings, Variety held a small ceremony awarding Stewart and Taylor with an honorary plaque to commemorate their involvement with Variety's charity. These awards will be featured in the Pinnacle's own walk of fame alongside other stars such as Jessica Simpson, Dane Cook and Brendan Fraser, who visited the theater in previous years.
"I'm really excited for you guys to see the movie. We put a lot of hard work into it, and I really think you're going to enjoy it," Lautner told fans. "This is definitely an honor, so thank you so much to all of you."
As the ceremony wound down the fans got antsy to see the movie and ran to the theaters as soon as ushers opened the doors. Within a minute the film began, and the audience screamed in anticipation.
The premiere at the Pinnacle was one of many more promo stops for Stewart and Lautner. Next the New Moon cast will head next to New York City.
New Moon will open in theaters nationwide Friday, Nov. 20.
