For many drivers thirsting for thrills of the road, the adventure lies just around the next curve.

This sentiment is taken quite seriously in the southwestern section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park known more commonly as "The Tail of the Dragon." It runs about a mile from the community of Deals Gap.  Formally named U.S. 129, The Dragon is an 11-mile stretch of highway home to 318 curves.  These hairpin turns are given such names as "Killboy", "Gravity Cavity", and "Break or Bust Bend".

Though this small community typically caters to the motorcycle population with a specifically named motorcycle resort and rental site, on any given afternoon, sports cars of all makes can also be found attempting to tame The Dragon.

Many are drawn to Deals Gap not only for the adrenaline rush but also for the picturesque scenery. As a place of historical value, Deals Gap is one of the last communities to be settled in the North Carolina region of the Great Smoky Mountains because of its inaccessible terrain. Originally home to Cherokee Indians, Deals Gap and The Tail of the Dragon are hosts today to a variety of enthusiasts ranging from the road to the hiking trail.
