Richard Kelly's latest sci-fi movie, The Box, fails in comparison to his 2001 cult classic, Donnie Darko.
Although The Box seems like a feeble attempt at a box office hit compared to Donnie Darko, it is better than Kelly's last film, Southland Tales, which got few favorable reviews.
The film, starring Cameron Diaz and James Marsden, is based on the 1970 short story, Button, Button, which was later turned into an episode of The Twilight Zone.
The plot has a lot of twists and turns, but none of them get answered. It film asks the question: If someone gave you a box with a mysterious button on it that if you pushed, you would receive $1 million dollars, but it would simultaneously kill someone you didn't know in the world at the same time; would you do it?
The movie is set in 1976. Norma Lewis (Diaz) and her husband, Arthur (Marsden), live a typical life with their son, until a mysterious man with a disfigured face offers them a proposition - the box. They have only 24 hours to decide, and unfortunately no matter what they choose, they will face horrifying consequences on the road ahead that will not only endanger themselves but those who they love around them.
The plot has a lot of twists and turns, but none of them get answered. The film simply leaves audiences scratching their heads.
