Kelley Cain recorded a double-double with 20 points and 20 rebounds as Tennessee beat Delta State 79-46 on Monday night at Thompson-Boling Arena.
"Not real impressed with a big part of what I saw in the first half," said Tennessee coach Pat Summitt.
"This team has to be more consistent, game in and game out. From the first game to this game, it was a night-and-day difference. I think they know it, also."
The Lady Vols had four players in double digits, including Cain's 20. Alicia Manning had 14, while Angie Bjorklund and Shekinna Strickland had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Kamiko Williamas added four points and six rebounds in 16 minutes of action.
"We have to get better play off of our bench. I thought Kamiko [Williams] came off in, got some quality minutes. It's good to see her active, and I think that's the quality minutes that she needed."
Cain's dominance in the post helped the Lady Vols outscore Delta State 46-18 in the paint. Tennessee also outrebounded the Lady Statesmen 64-33.
"A bright spot was the play of Kelley Cain and Taber Spani," said Summitt.
"Really disappointed that [Shekinna] Stricklen didn't come ready to step up and be a leader and be ready to play. She just has to do that - and Angie Bjorklund. Those two, we look to as go-to players offensively. We have to get better."
"Birana [Bass] wasn't as sharp in the second half, but it's a 40-minute game, and we did not bring it for 40-minutes across the board, and that disappointing."
The Lady Vols have five days to prepare before doing battle with No. 6 Baylor on Sunday in the season opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m
