Pat Summitt's 2009 Lady Vols erased any memory of a disappointing first-round exit in last year's NCAA Tournament with a 124-34 win over Carson-Newman in their first exhibition game of the season.
"We wanted to focus on what the team brought at both ends," Pat Summitt said. "Last year, we would sometimes play down to the level of our competition. Tonight, we maintained our intensity. Last year, we'd get a lead and think the game was over. Tonight, we were thinking execution."
Sophomore forward Glory Johnson led all socrers with 22 points, while Junior guard Angie Bjorklund provided another 21 points. Freshman sensation Taber Spani scored 17 points in her Lady Vol debut.
"We wanted to focus on what the team brought at both ends... Overall, I was pleased. We played well together." Lady Vols head coach Pat Summitt
The Lady Vols took a 22-5 lead by the 12:06 mark in the first half and never looked back, proving to be too much for the undersized Lady Eagles. The Lady Vols shot 62 percent for the night, while holding Carson-Newman to only 22 percent from the field.
After taking a 64-18 halftime lead, the Lady Vols came back out firing on all cylinders. The Lady Vols pressed Carson-Newman into 37 turnovers and scoring 49 points as a result of the turnovers.
Providing a dominant inside game, the Lady Vols had 68 points in the paint. Lady Vols center Kelley Cain had an impressive inside game scoring 16 points, blocking six shots and grabbing eight rebounds.
"Overall, I was pleased," Summitt said. "We played well together. Sometimes our defense was too tight. We weren't perfect, but we've got some good film to look at."
The Lady Vols host one more exhibition game on Nov. 9 against Delta State before starting the regular season Nov. 15 at home against Baylor.
