Jasmine Davis, a senior in the College of Communication and Information, may seem like the ordinary student, but in fact, she spent the spring semester of her junior year interning with the Late Show with David Letterman.
Davis started out her junior year just like any other student until she made a decision that would change her college experience. While searching the internet, she discovered an internship through the Late Show with David Letterman and decided to apply.
With little expectation, she was notified within two days of faxing her information that she was a finalist.
During fall break, she interviewed with nine members of various departments for many hours. Out of the 750 applicants, 20 were selected for an interview, and Davis was one of twelve selected for various internships.
It was unbelievable that it happened to me. This was the first internship I applied for and felt really blessed.Jasmine Davis, previous intern with the Late Show
From January 5th to late May, Davis stayed in Astoria, Queens, and took a fifteen minute subway ride to midtown Manhattan each day.
"It was unbelievable that it happened to me. This was the first internship I applied for and felt really blessed," Davis said.
While in Manhattan, Davis served as an eleventh floor production intern, working with inventory and stocking tapes for the show.
Some of her most memorable experiences were being in the fast-paced environment, working in a control room and getting to interact with staff. She also got a chance to work on a special project with some staff members and met Bruce Willis.
"Even my worst day there was my best day because I was happy to be where I was. A lot of people didn't have this opportunity and I planned on taking full advantage of it," Davis said.
Davis also described her experience as getting to understand the importance of networking and taking advantage of a hands on opportunity in which to learn.
If it seems too big, go for it anyway, because you never know what people are looking for. Jasmine Davis
Despite a 40 hour work week, Davis also got to walk across the entirety of the Brooklyn Bridge, shop and visit family in upstate New York. She also visited Central Park during snowfall and spent much leisure time in New York City's Times Square.
Upon being asked for advice for those seeking future internships, Davis said, "If it seems too big, go for it anyway, because you never know what people are looking for. Take advantage of UT's resources and follow your dreams."
Internships are available during summer, spring and fall with the Late Show with David Letterman.
