UT Bookstore hosted an event Thursday night that had never been held before. On the University Center Plaza, the bookstore, along with Reese's and 90.3 The Rock hosted a pumpkin carving contest for Second Harvest Food Bank.
Heather Floden, bookstore staff member said she "hopes to have the event again next year."
To enter a pumpkin into the contest, students had to bring a canned food item for Second Harvest Food Bank. Students who participate in the UT student rewards program could swipe their Vol Card for reward points. Along with the points, student could enter a raffle for Reese's prizes.
Lindsay Stewart helped register students for the Facebook group "Reese's University of Tennessee" to help win the competition against the University of Texas. The number of members in the group increases UT's chance of winning the competition.
In the pumpkin contest there were three different categories of pumpkins. There was the best UT pumpkin, most original and creepiest. The five judges had to decide which one in each category was the best. The five judges included director of the bookstore Mike Roos, culinary director John Anton, best-selling author Bill Bass, Laura Nishida and of course, Smokey.
Next year, Floden said she wants to increase "the pumpkins available here on campus, because it is hard for students to get off campus to get a pumpkin."
