The International House will be holding its next installment of the culture night series Wednesday, April 1. The theme deals with Brazil and Portuguese-speaking culture. The event begins at 6 p.m. and lasts until 7:30 p.m. Admission will be $5 per person.

Among the various activities planned for the evening, there will be presentations on Luso-Brazilian culture, a demonstration of capoeira (a Brazilian martial art that incorporates music) and karaoke focusing on popular Brazilian songs. There will also be several typical Brazilian foods, such as feijoada (a black bean stew served with rice) and brigadeiros (which are similar to chocolate truffles).

The event has been put together by both the I-House and the Portuguese club, known by its Portuguese acronym CLiP. The club's new president, Adam Hood, expects the event to go well.

"It should be really fun," Hood said. "This is the second time I've done it, but it's the first time I'm in charge of it.  Last semester we had the Coffee House event at the I-House and we had 90 people. This time, since it's a cultural night, we're expecting about 130."

Hood also explained that each of the Portuguese classes here at the university will actually have a particular song to sing at the event, but the stage won't be open to just them.

"It should be pretty interactive," he explained. "You can sing even if you're not in a class. There should be lots of students, but a lot of Knoxville's Brazilian community came out last year."

This year's event has been a group effort according to Hood, as professors in UT's Portuguese department have helped to come up with the various ideas. And both the club and other Brazilian students here at the university will be helping out with the event.

"There's going to be some good food, some good music and there should be lots of Brazilians," Hood said.

All proceeds will go to benefit both the I-House and CLiP. The club will also be selling t-shirts for $12 to all those interested.
