Jessica Spigner made history in game two Saturday against Mississippi State and helped Danielle Pieroni and the rest of the Lady Vols rebound from a game one loss in the doubleheader.
In the first inning of game two, Spigner hit a two-run home run to give the Lady Vols the lead. The home run, her 13th of the season, ties the Tennessee all-time season record for freshmen.
"The first game was a disappointment," Spinger said. "I just wanted to get it going. I was working on hitting both inside and outside pitches and whatever came in the zone, I was going to swing at it."
The home run also moves Spigner within three of tying Tonya Callahan for the Tennessee single-season record at 16. Spigner also had an RBI single later in the game.
"She's a very strong freshman," UT head coach Ralph Weekly said. "She and Tonya Callahan would be the best freshmen hitters we have ever had."
Tiffany Huff had a bases-clearing triple in the fourth inning to give Pieroni a comfortable lead to work with the remainder of the game.
Pieroni started her sixth game of the season and earned her fifth win and first career complete-game shutout.
"I'm excited that I got the opportunity," Pieroni said. "I've tried to keep myself ready. It's my last year, and I am going to do anything to help the team."
Nicole Kajitani hit the game-closing single in the fifth inning to bring home Holly Baker and trigger the mercy rule as Tennessee defeated the Bulldogs, 8-0.
In the first game, the Lady Vols took the lead in the second inning when Jen Lapicki scored on a Kelly Grieve hit. However, Mississippi State responded with several long innings against pitcher Cat Hosfield to take the lead.
The Lady Bulldogs had nine hits and four walks against Hosfield but ran several at bats to full counts. Hosfield totaled 145 pitches in the game. She managed to get seven strikeouts, but it wasn't enough as she was handed her sixth loss of the season.
"Cat left the ball high," Weekly said. "When you leave the ball high to a good hitting team and it's over the plate, they are going to hit you."
Mississippi State took the lead in the third inning with two runs after a bases loaded situation. They also scored two more in the fourth before Tennessee tied the game back up.
Lapicki hit a home run in the bottom of the fourth to start a comeback that included three runs to tie the game. However, the Lady Vols struggled to score runs throughout the entire game, leaving eight runners stranded, including a bases loaded set.
Hosfield tightened up in the sixth and seventh innings, but it was too late as Mississippi State's run in the top of the fifth was enough for the 5-4 win.
"We didn't play well in any facet of the game," Weekly said. "Mississippi State played really well and the result is a loss that we really don't need right now."
The loss was Tennessee's first at home this season. It was Mississippi State's first SEC win this season and first win overall in 12 games.
The team will complete the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
