Tapatios gives you real Mexican food but not atmosphere

Plain on the outside and inside, but don't judge books by their covers, get inside and order one of the many Mexican entrees.

If you're looking for some Mexican food that's not Taco Bell and is close to campus, Tapatios is the place.

Tapatios is reasonably priced and located on 22nd Street off Lake Avenue.

The menu includes the usual Mexican fare with burritos, tacos, fajitas and quesadillas. And thankfully, the portions are quite large.

I recommend the steak ranchero, which included a large steak with a mound of onions and peppers sitting atop with fried rice and refried beans smothered in queso.

The entirety of it was "muy delicioso," and when combined together in one mouthful, it's a flavor explosion.

The juiciness of the steak, the feel of the onions along with the smooth cheese, married with the pureed beans and rice leaves you forgetting what you were thinking.

Instead, you'll be left wondering how you went so long without eating something this good.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any dessert so I can't share my thoughts. However, I'm sure many have left completely satisfied with Tapatios generous portions.

The worst part about Tapatios is the atmosphere. It doesn't feel Mexican and the waiter was neither friendly nor hateful.

He was just doing his job in the most general sense.

Unfortunately, many restaurants lack atmosphere only to make up for it with good food and Tapatios is no exception.

Overall Tapatios can be summarized like this. You come in and say "Meh." You sit down, eat and say "mmmm!"
