Twisted conditioner leaves curls loose

Many stylists have told me I have the thickest, curliest hair they've ever worked on.

It's a blessing in some ways: I'll never have to pay big bucks for a body wave. But it's a curse in other ways: I spend a lot of money on high-end conditioners to moisturize my curls and maintain frizz.

So far, the only conditioners to tame my locks are Infusium 23's Moisturologie and SexyHair's Curly Sexy Hair. Both are fairly expensive. So I'm always on the lookout for a cheaper product.

The new Herbal Essences' line immediately caught my eye with its bold colors and wavy-shaped bottles. It's curl conditioner, Totally Twisted, was bright purple and infused with French lavender and jade extracts. The price tag was also appealing: $5 for 23.7 fluid ounces at Wal-Mart.

Totally Twisted isn't a bad product if you have thin-to medium-thick hair. But us gals with thick, curly hair need a little more moisture.
When I popped the bottle open in the shower, I was immediately enveloped with the product's light floral, perfumy scent. It stirred the senses but didn't overpower. Then I squeezed a quarter-sized portion into my hand and was impressed with the cream's thickness. Two quarter-sized squirts coated my entire hair.

After rinsing, I scrunched my hair using the regulars: V05 Extreme Style Curvaceous Curls Styling Mousse and L.A. Looks Sport Gel. Then I dried my hair using a diffuser.

I was torn with the results. My curls formed, which is good, but they were looser than usual. Instead of tight curls, I had loose beachy waves.

I straightened my hair for a few days and then gave Totally Twisted another shot. Again, I was pleased with the product's scent, which I would like to add lasted all day. But this time, it took five quarter-sized squirts of conditioner to coat my hair, which is never a good sign. (My hair has a bad habit of becoming immune to products.)

I left the product on my hair for a few minutes, and then washed it out. But instead of feeling soft and silky, my hair felt like straw.
