Burning Star Core, a music project by C. Spencer Yeh, brought a taste of experimental music to the opening night of Knoxville's Big Ears Festival on Feb. 6.

Yeh, backed by members of the Wasteland Jazz Unit, filled the Square Room with entrancing, multi-layered interludes  and chaotic sound experimentation.

Along with Yeh's violin, cardboard tubes and electronics were used to create an innovative sound.

Wasteland Jazz Unit member Jon Lorenz played dissonant melodies on the saxophone, while fellow member John Rich used screwdrivers and other tools on guitar strings to create a foreboding atmosphere.

The Big Ears festival was a three day event dedicated to the discovery of visionary musicians and artists through a variety of scheduled performances, discussions and workshops
