Tennessee basketball had a hard time at Arkansas, escaping with a 74-72 victory.
Bobby Maze hit the game-winning shot with five seconds on the game clock. Offensively the team began to carry its own, and once again Wayne Chism was a major factor this game, as he should be every game.
J.P. Prince also stepped up against the Razorbacks, contributing 13 points of his own and making some key defensive plays down the stretch.
Wednesday night's contest maximized what Tennessee has been about all year: offensively, it is all or nothing.
J.P. Prince, Wayne Chism and Tyler Smith have to carry this team offensively night in and night out.
Arkansas continued to expose Tennessee defensively, as has happened for much of the year.
Failing to stop penetration against quicker guards and giving Arkansas too many second chances were two of the bigger lapses defensively. Arkansas had too many easy baskets and open shots. Tennessee has to combine good defense with a consistent offense in order to make a run into the NCAA tournament.
Another consistently glaring problem for the Vols showed itself against Arkansas: poor guard play. When it comes to running an offense they simply lose sight of what is suppose to happen and launch 3-pointers. The strong suit for this team should be points in the paint by way of Wayne Chism and Tyler Smith.
If UT hopes to continue its two-game winning streak, the Vols must get better production out of their bench. Tennessee got 19 points off the bench, but will need more than that to win other road games in the SEC.
If no one besides Chism can step up and create production in the paint, the problems will continue for the Vols. Another big man has to come to life when Chism is not in the game.
Bruce Pearl has to get this team to perform better overall, before it is too late.
