The University of Tennessee Outdoor Program, Make Orange Green, and the Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization will hold Bike Day from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept.2 at the Pedestrian Walkway.

Bike Day is designed to introduce students to an alternative mode of transportation, according to Carleton Lane, a representative of the Outdoor Program.

"The goals of Bike Day are to have fun, to celebrate bicycles, and to encourage people to use alternative forms of transportation," Lane said. "Be it biking, walking, riding the bus, or carpooling."

Lane said Bike Day will offer workshops on bike maintenance, tune ups, and group rides to enable people to gain knowledge needed to start bicycle commuting. Bike Day will also offer many fun events to attract people.

"Events like the tricycle race and pedal powered smoothies are just to be fun," said Lane. "And draw people in to learn more about alternative transportation."

In these times of economic hardships, biking is a great way to save money while getting great exercise.

"The benefits to commuting by bike are numerous," explained Lane. "It is inexpensive, carbon free, builds fitness, and there is always somewhere to park."
