The Tennessee football program concluded its fall camp with a scrimmage Saturday afternoon.
A 12:21 p.m. start time helped simulate the game day routine for the Volunteers season opener next Saturday against Western. The Volunteers had a light scrimmage that mostly consisted of special teams scenarios.
Freshmen: There is no question this year's freshman class has shined during preseason camp. On Saturday freshman Nu'Keese Richardson, Marsalis Teague, David Oku and Bryce Brown all saw first team action on offense, with Brown running for two scores.
On the defensive side of the ball various freshmen saw significant playing time including Janzen Jackson, Eric Gordon, Mike Edwards and Montori Hughes. Eric Gordon reeled in another interception, one of three thrown by third team quarterback Nick Lamaison.
Kicking Game: There was a clear emphasis on specials teams during Saturday's workout, putting Daniel Lincoln and Chad Cunningham under the microscope. Lincoln continued to show the same success that he has had through all of fall camp, going three for four on field goal attempts, his longest coming from 46 yards. After the scrimmage Lincoln said, "My confidence is better than ever."
Kick-off responsibility should go to Cunningham after a strong showing Saturday. Cunningham will also take on punting duties after averaging 39.5 yards per punt during five games last season.
Returners: Both Dennis Rogan and Nu'Keese Richardson saw time at punt returner during Saturday's scrimmage, Richardson fumbled one punt. During kick offs freshman David Oku and Rogan were deep to return. Oku sprung two long returns out near the 40-yard line.
Injuries: Offensive lineman Vladimir Richard and tight end Jeff Cottam were both held out of Saturday's work, but Kiffin said both would return Monday.
Tauren Poole was shaken up after an early punt and did not return, no word on his condition.
"Today was more of a mental day," Lane Kiffin said after the scrimmage, evidenced by the lack of tackling.
One thing is universal throughout the Volunteer program: they are ready to hit someone other than their teammates.
Freshman safety Janzen Jackson said, "During camp going against the other guys that's all been good, but I am ready to see another color on the field."
The Volunteers will do just that, when they see the Big Red of Western Kentucky next Saturday. Kick-off is set for 12:21 p.m.
