UT’s newest sorority, Delta Phi Omega Inc., raised money for Pratham and Asha for Education to promote children’s literacy and education.

DPO held their annual philanthropic week, Literacy Through Unity Week.

The sorority hosted the Test Your Skills: “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?” challenge including categories such as Southeast Asia trivia, American history and spelling.

“After the event, I hope our peers realize that we are all very privileged to be college students and have the ability to further our education,” said DPO Vice President, Khatija Ahmed.  “The youth in many South Asian countries do not have the luxury of attending school and receiving an education,” she said.

DPO held their first Indian Culture Night as apart of the Literacy Through Unity Week.  The night included traditional Indian food, informative presentation on Indian culture, Indian cultural dancing, henna tattoos and a traditional clothing and jewelry sale.  All money made from the tickets and sales from the jewelry and clothing went towards Pratham and Asha.

Pratham is India’s largest non-profit organization that strives for pre-school and primary education.  The organization has helped children receive a good education, thus creating opportunities for their family and community.

Asha is another non-profit organization that focuses on education of the under privileged by promoting social and economic change in India.

The final event of the week was volunteering with The Boys and Girls Club.
