The Tennessee Lady Vols softball team completed the weekend sweep of Auburn in Saturday's doubleheader with walk-off hits in both games.
In game one, Tennessee (33-9-1, 10-6-1 SEC) tied an all-time record for innings played and Danielle Pieroni had a great game pitching and batting to give Tennessee a 2-1 win.
In the bottom of the 11th inning, Danielle Pieroni singled home Ashley Andrews for the game winning run.
To start the game, Danielle Pieroni held a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Pieroni had her longest outing of the season, going 6 innings giving up one run on two hits. Pieroni had five strikeouts but did not get a decision in the game.
"Before the third inning, I went to the bullpen and worked on my other pitches," said Pieroni. "I had my other pitches working after that and it really complemented my change up and helped me get through the later innings."
Before the game, Pieroni and Lillian Hammond were honored as seniors.
In a game that was shaping up to be a pitching duel in which one run might win, Nicole Kajitani gave the Lady Vols the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. On a full count, Kajitani hit a home run into the wind just over the left field wall.
"My home runs are never expected," said Kajitani. "I just swing the bat hard and try to make contact. If it goes out, it goes out."
However, it failed to be enough as Auburn's Lindsey Harrelson answered with her own home run in the top of the seventh inning.
After Pieroni gave up the home run and her only walk of the game to start the seventh, Ashton Ward came in and pitched in relief for three innings. Ward had three perfect innings with two strikeouts.
"Danielle had a great game pitching," said head coach Ralph Weekly. "She's an off speed pitcher and they were starting to sit on those pitches and I didn't want to take her out but it was a need. The game went to eleven innings. We would have had to eventually. But she came up with the big play anyway."
Tennessee had a chance to win the game in the ninth inning with bases loaded and no outs. But three straight outs sent the game to the tenth inning.
Cat Hosfield entered the game in the tenth and pitched two scoreless innings with only one hit and two strikeouts to give the offense a chance.
"It was a battle," said Hosfield. "Our whole team got used. We had so many substitutions. It was a whole team effort. We came through in the last innings when we needed to."
In the bottom of the 11th, Ashley Andrews hit a triple with one out. Pieroni pinch-hit for Hosfield and hit the game winning single.
"Karen has always told us that it's the at bat coming up that matters," said Pieroni. "I was zero for four but that didn't mean anything about the last at bat. I just came up to the plate and wanted to have a good at bat."
In the second game, Tennessee jumped out to a one-run lead with an RBI single from Tiffany Huff.
Hosfield started the game and pitched all seven innings for a nine inning day and 16 innings in two days. In game two, Hosfield had seven strikeouts while allowing only two runs on six hits and two walks.
Auburn tied the game in the third inning and took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Both runs were scored on sacrifice fly balls to left field.
"They saw me a lot," said Hosfield. "They saw me yesterday and then the first game before the final one. I knew I just needed to try and stay relaxed and focus on one pitch at a time. I've been working on my waste pitches, trying to make them look more like strikes and it really helped."
In the bottom of the seventh, Tennessee tightened up and answered back with a walk drawn by Shelby Burchell and then a perfectly played sacrifice bunt by Pieroni to move the runner into scoring position. Andrews added another clutch hit late to put runners on the corner.
Kajitani stepped up with a hit down the right field line that scored Andrews all the way from first as Kajitani slid safely in for a triple, securing a 3-2 victory and the three-game sweep for the Lady Vols.
"I was just trying to get myself on base in that situation," said Kajitani. "I was looking for an outside pitch and I just kept taking pitches until one came outside."
"This team is going to fight," said Pieroni. "We always try to get it done and have a sense of urgency in the games. The younger girls are figuring it out and it was probably the biggest wins of the year."
The sweep of Auburn was the first three-game sweep of any SEC team this year for the Lady Vols.
"I'm glad we got the sweep," said Weekly. "I'm happy with the games. We had clutch hits out of Pieroni in game one and a clutch hit in game two by Kajitani."
Tennessee will host East Tennessee State on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
