Orange and white used to be the most prominent colors on campus, but now with more environmentally aware students, green is the new orange.

As students we see it everywhere, the recycling bins, the light bulbs, and now within the dining halls. No longer are students piling trays with hordes of food. It is all about what you carry on the first trip and what is worth going back for.

UT has altered its lifestyle to accommodate the more environmentally aware, but this is not just for the good of the earth. The university is going to be saving a large chunk of money by going trayless. UT has altered its lifestyle to accommodate the more environmentally aware, but this is not just for the good of the earth. The university is going to be saving a large chunk of money by going trayless.

"With food costs rising and college students increasingly concerned about the imprint their schools leave on the environment, catering giants Aramark and Sodexo have turned going trayless into campus chic. No tray means no place to pile dishes of stuff many students only sample and toss," wrote Bruce Horovitz from USA Today.

By giving up the trays, the university is reducing water usage and food waste. No longer are students able to pile on mass amounts of food, which unintentionally they will probably not consume. I remember being a freshmen and "sampling" all the food just to see what I would like. I would leave most of it untouched and end up throwing it away. Another positive outcome which comes from losing the trays is the fact that as students we won't be eating as much.

Without the tray we can basically carry only two plates and those two can carry only so much. The freshmen 15 doesn't look so threatening to me anymore, because I would rather not get up to grab more food.

While we won't know the exact profit the univeristy will make before we actually finish the first semester, I think the trayless look is just the beginning of more changes. The world is going green and the big orange doesn't want to be left behind.

Ways you can 'Make Orange Green'

  1. Turn off the lights when you leave the room.
  2. Trade in old light bulbs for new, more environmentally friendly and cost effective light bulbs.
  3. Print homework on both sides of the paper.
  4. Take the T or the KAT instead of driving.
  5. Recycle.
