The environmental group Students Promoting Environmental Action in Knoxville will host a Sustainability Week Sept. 22-26 on campus for any student interested in sustainable living and environmental awareness.
Sustainability Week will kick off Monday, Sept. 22, with Mt. Trashmore, a display of all the trash accumulated on the UT campus in a one hour time-span at the Humanities Plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tuesday will feature President Arjun Makhijani of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, who will give a presentation on his U.S. energy policy of a carbon-free, nuclear-free future at 11 a.m. in the University Center, Room 223.
SPEAK has planned Local Foods Day for Wednesday, Sept. 24, on the Pedestrian Mall, which will be an opportunity for students to receive information on where to get local food in Knoxville and the importance of supporting local markets. A walk to the Market Square's farmer's market will follow.
The group will show the film "Global Oneness Project" on Thursday, Sept. 25, from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Hodges Library, Room 313. On Friday SPEAK will show "Live Earth" from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Room 253 in the library. The Knoxville Critical Mass bike ride will follow. Riders will meet at 6 p.m. at the base of the Sunsphere.
On Saturday, Sept. 27, and Sunday, Sept. 28, the Sustainable Living Road Show will visit Fiji Island from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and provide live music and booths promoting environmental issues.
