The Tennessee Volunteers passing offense has been anything but potent during the first two games of the 2008 college football season. That is, with the exception of an explosive pair of wide receivers: Lucas Taylor and Gerald Jones.

The two wide outs have combined to catch 19 of quarterback Jonathan Crompton's 38 completions, while accounting for 248 of Crompton's 429 passing yards.

As Jones said following last week's win over UAB, Knoxville may have its own version of Gotham City's "Dynamic Duo."

"We call ourselves Batman and Robin. He's Batman, I'm Robin. He calls the show. I'm just the sidekick."

Jones and Taylor played those roles to perfection in the win over the Blazers.

The sophomore Jones, or the "Boy Wonder," hauled in only three passes for 39 yards in the win. However, two of his grabs went for touchdowns. Taylor, a senior, caught nine passes for 132 yards and caught a pair of key passes to set up the scores by Jones.

"That was the game plan: to get Luke the ball," Jones said. "He's a great player and he kind of makes my job easier because now they're not just focusing on me. They're focusing on him, so hopefully I can sneak by like I did on the first touchdown."

We call ourselves Batman and Robin. He's Batman, I'm Robin. He calls the show. I'm just the sidekick. Gerald JonesIf the beginning of Jones' career is any indication, Tennessee fans can expect to see him "sneak by" defenses quite a bit in the future. The Oklahoma native's performance against UAB came on the heels of his gaining 160 total yards in the season opener against UCLA.

Jones also flashed his big-play ability during his freshman campaign. He rushed for 58 yards and two scores while lined up at quarterback in UT's "G-Gun" formation, and his touchdown grab in overtime against Kentucky proved to be one of the most important catches of the season for Tennessee.

"Gerald is a playmaker," Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton said. "When we get him matched up on a corner or a linebacker I think we've got a great opportunity to make plays, and that's what he does."

Jones is not alone in the category of solid wide receivers on the Tennessee roster, as Taylor became Erik Ainge's favorite target in 2007. The Louisiana native led the Vols with 73 catches for 1,000 yards as a junior, and he also finished second on the team with five touchdown grabs.

Taylor has also had success on trick plays for Tennessee in the two seasons prior to 2008. He displayed his throwing ability on fake reverses by passing for a 56-yard score against Georgia in 2007 and a 48-yard touchdown against Florida in 2006. Those two passes are the only attempts of his career.

"He's a great player," Jones said of Taylor. "He's a great leader. He's like a big brother to me. He don't really talk much, but he leads by example."

Jones and Taylor will likely have to play a big role if the Vols are to upset No. 4 Florida at Neyland Stadium on Saturday. It's a challenge the latter says they are up to.

"We know we've got a big one come Saturday."
