59-20. That doesn't have to be explained to Vol fans. The final score that was hung on the Volunteers' head last season down in Gainesville, Fla., is a motivating factor for the team as they prepare to face one of their biggest rivals, the Florida Gators, in Neyland Stadium Saturday.
"You could feel the anticipation leading up to this football game, starting on Sunday when we did the corrections from the UAB game and got right into to the Florida game," head coach Phillip Fulmer said during the Tuesday's media day.
One of the biggest keys for the Vols this week will be the running game. Traditionally in this rivalry, the team with the most rushing yards usually wins the game. Against the UAB Blazers this past weekend, Tennessee finished the day with 266 yards on the ground with three touchdowns.
Fulmer knows a similar effort is needed against the rival Gators.
"Offensively, we found a bit more of a personality as we went along," Fulmer said. "That's something we will continue to work toward, but I do think that all of the perimeter game is important for us to be a balanced football team."
It doesn't help that the Gators are ranked No. 13 in the nation in run defense and have only given up one touchdown so far this season.
"The defensive team has its own personality," Fulmer acknowledged. "They do a job with their people, and they have a very aggressive approach to how they play."
One factor that will weigh heavily in the Vols' playcalling is the score. If Tennessee gets down big early, that will force them to abandon the run for the pass like in years past.
The UT defense will have a lot of input on the score at the end of the day. Obviously, containing quarterback Tim Tebow will be the focal point of John Chavis' defense this week. Tebow scored twice on the ground against the Vols last season.
"Tim Tebow is a returning Heisman winner, and that's no accident," Fulmer said. "He makes them go. He does a fantastic job of running the offense, but he's most dangerous when things break down and he's out there making a play running the ball or throwing the ball."
Fulmer thinks his team got a good early lesson on how to defend Tebow after last weekend's victory over the Blazers.
"We made strides in the last ballgame to build on," he said. "Keeping them out of the end zone was a real plus. Going against similar styles, we should have some carry over there from a defensive standpoint."
No matter what happens on Saturday, fans are usually always in for a good game when these two teams meet. Often times the winner of this game usually has a strong influence on representing the SEC East in the conference championship.
Although the Gators have had the Vols number since 2005, Tennessee was still able to rally and make it to the SEC Championship last season. Fulmer would like to avoid that road again this year, yet always welcomes the chance to face off against Florida.
"We're looking forward to it," he said. "When you look at the opportunity out there to start off with a big SEC game this early in the year, I think we'll find out a lot about ourselves and our football team as we go through this week."
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. EST on CBS.
