The Redeem Team lived up to its namesake Thursday night, rebounding from two deficits to defeat Volatile Mindz 14-12 on the University of Tennessee intramural flag football field.
A miscue by the Volatile Mindz's offense pushed the Redeem Team over the threshold. Tied at 12 on their own 10-yard line, an errant snap went over the head of quarterback Chuck Lipscomp and straight into the end zone. By rule, when the ball hits the ground the play is dead, giving the Redeem Team a safety and two-point lead.
"I was upset, I just stood over (on the sideline)," said Lipscomp, captain for the Volatile Mindz. "I was hoping to get the ball back to try again, but it didn't happen."
On the next possession the Redeem Team converted a fourth down play with a 10-yard pass from quarterback Shannon Moran to John Goodwin to secure the win just as rain began to come down.
"I didn't really think about it, honestly," Goodwin said. "It was a little wet ... it was tough to get to."
The Redeem Team didn't get on the board until 16:30 left in the second half, as Moran found Bryce Basler in the end zone for the 6-6 tie.
"We decided to actually listen to each other and stop fighting with the refs," Moran said.
The big play of the night came as Lipscomp hooked up with Larry Mcafee for a 50-yard bomb to give the Mindz a 12-6 lead with seven minutes remaining.
Lipscomp finished the night 5-for-16 for 69 yards and a touchdown, while amounting 47 yards and a score on the ground.
"We're going to work on defense," Lipscomp said. "The short game, that's what killed us."
The 'Team reacted by marching down the field on a 12-play drive, which ended when Moran scrambled to the left side and stretched the ball out over the goal line to tie the game.
"We decided to just take what they gave us and not try to go down the field every single play," Moran said. "In flag football you almost (have) to just take what they give you."
Moran ended the game 21-for-34 for 172 yards and a touchdown. Basler was his top target with seven catches for 70 yards.
The Redeem Team (2-0) takes on Rainbows next week, while Volatile Mindz (1-1) plays Eastside Legends.
