After a tough road trip to College Station that included losses to nationally ranked Indiana and North Carolina, the No. 20 Lady Volunteers soccer team fell to No. 13 West Virginia 1-0 in their first game at Regal Soccer Stadium this season.
First Half
The first half was filled with opportunities both for Tennessee and Illinois but neither team was able to capitalize and put the ball into the back of the net.
Tennessee's best first half opportunity came when forward Anna Fisher controlled a pass and pressed back over the middle, drawing West Virginia goalkeeper Kerri Butler up in the box. The shot, unfortunately for Fisher, was a line drive straight to the chest of the West Virginia goalkeeper.
It's a tough loss to a great team but losing is unacceptable in this program. All the credit goes to West Virginia. Head Coach Ange Kelly
The Mountaineers had an equally near miss when midfielder Amanda Cicchini used a long, cross-field pass to find Megan Mischler wide open at the far post. However, Mischler was ruled offside, ending the threat.
Second Half
The second half began in exciting fashion when goalkeeper Jaimel Johnson took a free kick from midfield that nearly found its way to the back of the net.
Unfortunately for Tennessee, the early shot from their All-American goalkeeper was the team's best chance of the entire second half for the Lady Vols.
As for the Mountaineers, the second 45 minutes proved far more prosperous.
Blake Miller scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute when she volleyed a ball into the net after a one-hop cross. The shot came six yards out and squeaked just past Johnson's outstretched arms.
Review
The Mountaineers handed the Vols a 1-0 loss, the third of the season in only four games for Tennessee.
"It's a tough loss to a great team but losing is unacceptable in this program. All the credit goes to West Virginia," Coach Ange Kelly said. "They have a ton of talent on their team and they're always very well organized. They showed that this evening."
The game was the second of the 2008 First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic. Tennessee returns to action on Sunday in search of their first home win when they take on the Illinois.
"Illinois is a big team," Kelly said. "They are physical and they are going to be dynamic up top. We're going to have to regroup because we're coming off of a loss, but that doesn't matter. We have to take it one game at a time. It's going to be an absolute battle again."
No. 15 Illinois will be the fourth nationally-ranked team the Lady Vols have faced in the first five games of the 2008 season.
Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. at Regal Soccer Stadium.
