The American Cancer Society will host the fundraising event "Swim For Life" on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Student Aquatic Center.

Anyone can participate by registering online or at the event for $25. Participants will swim in groups, and can swim as many or few laps as they want. In addition to helping fight cancer, all participants will receive an event T-shirt.

Swimmers can collect flat donations or pledges that are on a per lap basis to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The group's mission is to fight cancer through research and education and support patients and their families, Drew Rutherford, executive chairperson for Relay for Life at UT, said.

"The money we raise at this event will benefit our 2008 Relay for Life total," he said.

The event is looking to recruit around 200 area swimmers for participation and also has a monetary goal of $10,000.

"We've had a lot of support from the Knoxville swimming community, and we're also working to gain support from the University of Tennessee Swim Club," Rutherford said.
