Possibly one of the biggest contributing factors to poor voter turnout for college students is the tedious process of absentee voting.

With requirements varying from state-to-state, and information difficult to track down at times, students often choose not to vote rather than taking the time to go through the steps of voting before election day.

Tennessee Journalist Reporter Benjamin Dishong spoke with UT students who are struggling to vote for the first time in 2008, and some who will not vote because they find the process too complicated.

Tennessee Early Voting Statistics (2004 general election)

- 1,107,398 early votes were cast statewide

- 45.08 percent of total votes cast were early

- 2.22 percent of voters utilized absentee ballots

- 60.36 percent of Knox County voters voted in an early election; the second highest total in the state behind only Troupsdale

- 2.16 percent of early Knox County voters used an absentee ballot
