The Trail of Doom lies within the corn maze of Oakes Farm

Halloween is just around the corner, and the ghouls already have made their appearance at the Oakes Farm in Corryton, Tenn., one of the largest corn mazes in East Tennessee.

The 11-acre professionally designed maze by Shawn Stolworthy is a tribute to Pat Summitt and the eight-time national champion Lady Vols.

Separate from the regular corn maze is the haunted Trail of Doom, which holds some of the most horrifying attractions and ghouls you'll find in East Tennessee.

The trail is claiming victims from Thursday, Oct. 2 to Saturday, Oct. 25, and from Monday, Oct. 27 to Saturday, Nov. 1.

There are no checkpoints in the trail. Brandon Ross, an employee at Oakes Farm, suggests visitors be prepared to be chased by frightening men with chainsaws, to see mounds of dead bodies, to experience a vortex tunnel and to hear whispers from the undead.

"This year, the trail provides the experience of allowing you to feel as if you have been buried alive," Ross, a four-year chainsaw actor in the maze, said. "The Buried Alive Building contains stacks of dead bodies and the undead rising from the grave."

The vortex tunnel also brings new nightmares and fears you've never experienced, making it almost impossible to pass through without losing your step.

Ross said it typically takes a person around 30 minutes to complete the trail with varying amounts of people coming through. Among many college students, the Vols and Lady Vols basketball teams also have ventured into the maze.

"So far, no one has died in the maze, but we have had some pass out and have panic attacks before," Ross said.

"This year, we plan to have some of the scariest attractions and most frightening actors, so hopefully we will scare some people to death," Ross joked.
