The Lady Vols soccer team defeated No. 15 ranked LSU on Friday night by a score of 2-1.
The Lady Vols took the pitch on head coach Angela Kelly's 37th birthday and delivered the best gift possible; a hard fought victory.
"Tonight was a wonderful win," Kelly told UT Lady Vols. "It just feels good because it felt familiar. You felt the excitement in the stadium and most importantly, you saw the smiles on the players' faces.
"They just had fun and that's really the key."
The game began with LSU controlling possession of the ball for most of the first half. Both teams came out and moved the ball well, but got only a few chances to score. Neither team capitalized on their chances and the game went to the half tied at zero.
LSU got 8 shots on goal in the first half while Tennessee only had 4. The Lady Vols received great play from senior goalkeeper Jaimel Johnson, who made three big saves in the first half.
Tennessee came out strong in the second half and didn't waste any time finding the back of the net. Junior midfielder Mick Imgram scored the first goal of the game and the Lady Vols took the lead with 40:40 left in the second half.
The Lady Vols then struck again only seconds later when senior midfielder Kylee Rossi scored the team's second goal of the game, giving the Lady Vols a 2-0 lead with 40:12 left to play.
The game then continued with brilliant play by Tennessee goalkeeper Johnson, who made four more saves in the second half. LSU then scored with a goal from freshman forward Kellie Murphy, making the score 2-1 with 20:48 left in the game. Despite giving up the goal, the Lady Vols defense gives up no more and Tennessee held on to win by a final score of 2-1.
This is the Lady Vols first win in the SEC and moves their overall record to 4-7-0. The Lady Vols next game is Sunday, October 5, at 1:00 p.m. ET at Regal Stadium against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
