The Tennessee Volunteers will look to rebound from a loss at the hands of South Carolina when the Wyoming Cowboys (3-5, 1-5 MWC) come to Knoxville on Saturday. The Vols hope to salvage a disappointing season by winning their remaining games and reaching a bowl game.

Despite the disappointment of this season, and the announcement that Phillip Fulmer will step down as head coach after this year, the players have kept the right mindset.

"I've never been, really, more pleased and honored than with the response of my football team," Fulmer said. "Sometimes when you're not doing as well as you would like or anybody expects you to be, you don't always know where your team is. But this team, I've found, is a really unusual group.

"They've continued to respond and practice hard and fight through the injuries. So, I really do appreciate that."

Phillip Fulmer's final homecoming game at Tennessee pits his Vols against the Cowboys' potent rushing attack. Wyoming running back Devin Moore leads the Mountain West Conference with 1036 rushing yards.

The Cowboys rushed for an astounding 378 yards last week in a victory over San Diego State. Moore earned Mountain West Player of the Week honors with his career high 234-yard performance.

"We're going to have to play well and our defense has been good against the run and consistent most of the year. They certainly are a challenge for that," Fulmer said.

The Tennessee defense, ranked 11th in the nation, has been solid all year. However, the Volunteer offense has struggled mightily and is ranked 114th nationally.

"Most of our concerns continue to be with just being more consistent and efficient from an offensive standpoint," Fulmer said.

Most of the problems on offense have stemmed from turnovers and untimely penalties.

"Looking at their defense, they're a solid defensive football team," Fulmer said. "We've been kind of our own worst enemy offensively. If we can eliminate those [mistakes] and take some further steps forward, then hopefully we'll be able to manage that."

The troubled offense will be without one of its weapons as running back Montario Hardesty is out with a stress fracture in his leg.

The Vols and Cowboys have met twice before, in 1999 and 2002. Tennessee won both matchups handily.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Neyland Stadium. The game will not be televised but it can be heard on the Vol Radio Network.
