The Tennessee Volunteers bats finally woke up on Sunday in the third game of the weekend series against No. 13 Vanderbilt. Pitching shortcomings cost the Vols the win though, as they fell 10–8 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

"It's a tough one, obviously. I thought we came out ready to play, we did a good job early." Tennessee coach Todd Raleigh said. "I thought the turning point of the game was the fourth inning when we gave up three runs after scoring three runs ourselves in the bottom of the third, that was the difference maker."

The Vols (25–23, 11–13 SEC) and starting pitcher Ty'Reller Harris carried a 5–4 lead after six innings, but the Volunteer bullpen allowed six runs in the final three innings as Vandy picked up the win and the sweep.

Kentrail Davis did his part to pick his team up and put them on his back.

Davis started his tear at the plate with a triple in the first inning and followed in his next at-bat with a three-run home run in the third inning. The freshman from Theodore, Alabama went deep again in the fifth, this time a solo-home run.

"It was just a really good day for me at the plate," Davis said. "My last at-bat I couldn't come through, but that's baseball."

Davis finished the day 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

Ty'Relle Harris managed to retire the Commodores in order in the top of the first, something the Vols had been unable to do during the opening inning in the first two games of the series as they allowed three runs on Friday and four runs on Staurday.

Yan Gomes used the Davis triple in the first to score a sacrifice fly to center field—the Vols first lead of the weekend.

Vanderbilt would respond quickly to their first defecit.

Catcher Robin Shea connected on the first pitch Harris delivered and sent it out of the park to tie the game at one run each.

Tennessee got back on the board when Davis came to the plate in the bottom of the third.

After a Jarred Frazier walk and a Andy Simunic single, Davis launched his first of two home runs on the day, over the right field wall.

The Commodores matched the Vols in the next inning though, this time using three RBIs from three different players to tie the game at four.

The Vols found themselves in need of run production in the fifth inning when Davis came to the plate for the third time.

Davis responded, for the third time in three at-bats, with a solo homer to right field, giving his team the lead for the third time on the day.

Raleigh called on his bullpen after Harris pitched six innings and it responded by allowing five runs on seven hits. Reliever Danny Wiltz was unable to hold on to the one run lead he adopted, giving up four runs in his two innings of work and picking up the loss.

Vanderbilt used three runs in both the seventh and ninth innings to put the Vols down five with only three outs to work with heading into the ninth inning.

The Vols attempted rally, which included a Jeff Lockwood home run and a two-run home run from pinch hitting P.J. Polk, ultimately fell two runs short as Vandy took the win and the series sweep.

Tennessee will be back at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Wednesday when they host in-state foe Belmont. The Vols will host SEC East rival Kentucky in a must-win weekend series as they fight for a spot in the eight team SEC tournament.
