University of Tennessee students and faculty gathered Wednesday to hear the reports from four Journalism and Electronic Media students who traveled to Prague this past January.
The students attended seminars that focused on foreign correspondence in today’s media. They learned valuable information from knowledgeable instructors and first hand experience.
The eight days of seminars was lead by Michael Jordan of The Christian Science Monitor. Jordan taught the student to "be the fly on the wall," said student Joel Smithson. Students worked on their own assignments covering news which related to the international and local aspects of the Czech Republic culture.
Eric Gedenk, Margaret Minefee, Joel Smithson and Shannon Winaker were not the only U.S. students to attend the lectures. Others from all over the nation, including Florida and California, were in attendance. England, South Africa and Hong Kong were also represented.
"It makes you think the career is actually tangible," said Shannon Winaker. It makes you think the career is actually tangible. said Shannon Winaker The students were able to meet journalists who had been imbedded in war zones, shot at and almost killed. They learned the life of a foreign correspondent was not easy - but career opportunities existed.
The students made proposals to "inject international elements into some of our journalism classes", which goes along with the ‘Ready for the World’ activities happening around campus. In June, two more students will travel to Prague with two more following in January.
Talk with your advisor about studying abroad. The opportunities are endless for any student who wants to learn more about life while seeing the world.
