The Lady Vols softball team (30-5) defeated Lipscomb in both games of a doubleheader Tuesday night. Tennessee defeated the Lady Bison 8-0 in game one and 4-1 in game two.
Tiffany Huff led the way for the Lady Vols with a three-run homer in game one. The game was shortened to five innings in large part to the run production of the offense. The offense for the Lady Vols only had nine hits but was able to draw five walks and had four stolen bases.
The Lady Vols opened the scoring in the second inning on a perfectly placed bunt by Lillian Hammond to score Erin Webb. Hammond scored on a double steal later in the inning.
Anita Manuma hit a two-RBI double in the fourth before Huff hit a towering shot to straightaway center for her second home run of the season.
"I was just being aggressive early in the count," said Huff. "It was the first pitch. It felt good."
Kelly Grieve scored the Lady Vols final run in the fifth inning on a throwing error to end the game.
The run production helped pitcher Ashton Ward as she struggled early with location on her pitches. Ward had a decent night pitching overall, though, with six strikeouts and only one walk.
"I really wasn't myself pitching but luckily we had great defense," said Ward. "I don't think it was my best performance. I found some things I need to work on."
The shutout gave Ward her 16th win on the season in 17 starts. It was also her seventh complete game this season.
I really wasn't myself pitching but luckily we had great defense. Ashton WardMegan Rhodes put together a solid game pitching in the nightcap. Rhodes struck out five straight batters after allowing a walk and a hit in the first before the Lady Vols were able to take control of the game. The win improves Rhodes to 14-2 on the season.
The Lady Vols took control with a three-run second inning. Pinch-runner Kelsey Stander started the scoring on a double steal before Hammond hit an inside the park homerun that scored Huff. The home run was the first Hammond's career.
"It was a good pitch and I happened to get under it," said Hammond. "Somehow it got by the fielder. I really didn't think I was going to be waived home, but its exciting and I will take what I can get."
Chandra Mogan scored in the fifth inning for Tennessee on a Doepking single to give the Lady Vols a four-run lead.
Lipscomb scored its only run of the day with a home run to open the sixth inning. Rhodes then allowed a hit, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch to put two Lipscomb runners in scoring position. However, she was able to retire the next three batters to avoid further damage.
Rhodes pulled a back muscle with two outs in the seventh and had to be relieved by Ward, who closed out the game with a strikeout.
"It's very minor," said head coach Ralph Weekly. "We just wanted to get her out of there because we have Auburn coming up."
The Lady Vols travel to Auburn this weekend for a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a final game on Sunday.
"We're pretty even," said Weekly. "They have the benefit of playing at home. It's going to be a challenge."
