UT student prepares to travel to Uganda

Having been to Hawaii, Germany and Jamaica, among other travels, Dustyn Winder is eager to set his feet in Uganda for a month as he volunteers with The Real Uganda organization.

A sophomore in Journalism and Electronic media, Winder will spend May 15 through June 15 working with orphans for an after-school care associated with Mukono, a multi-purpose youth organization.

Leslie Weighill, the founder and current leader of The Real Uganda, chose Dustyn to be a part of her international team.

Weighill said that the team will strive to "provide skills and funding for local NGO's and schools on a consistent and ongoing basis through its partnership with The Global Volunteer Network."

I'm really looking forward to the entire experience of it, of being in Africa. Dustyn WinderWinder will care for orphans, and many have AIDS.  No guidelines exist, and he will be given no supplies to help him occupy the children.  The decision of how to care for the children daily is completely his.

Winder is prepared to take on the responsibility of caring for the children by himself.  He emphasized many times that he prefers to be self-innovative instead of being told what to do.  After pointing out that the school does have an athletic field, Winder said he would like to teach the orphans how to play American football.

While caring for the children is the main purpose of Winder's trip, he will have a large amount of free time for which he is already considering his travels and explorations.  He aims to visit Uganda's neighboring countries.  He especially wants to see the Memorial in the neighboring country of Rwanda and travel on a safari through the Nile River.

Winder will be the only American living in the small and relatively poor village of Naggalama.  The village has no running water, and the water he will receive will not be safe to drink.

However, he is guaranteed a single room, and his team has agreed to do his laundry.

The thought of being alone in a remote village in Africa hardly daunts Winder.  While he said that his biggest fear is of the unknown, he is focused upon the excitement of a new experience.

Winder discovered The Real Uganda after he missed the deadline to apply for an internship with Invisible Children.  Intent upon obtaining the internship next year, he searched for a way that he could gain experience and expand his resume by participating with another volunteer organization in Uganda.  He found The Real Uganda and immediately contacted Weighill.

Through such an experience, Winder will quench his appetite for travel, make a significant contribution to his resume and serve the orphans in Uganda who are in desperate need of attention and aid.
