The Tennessee Ice Vols finished the ACHA National Tournament winning their third straight game by beating Northwood University 7-5 Saturday night. Senior captain Jon Benner scored an empty net goal to clinch the win in his final game in the orange and white.

The game was a tale of three completely different periods.

Period one was owned by the Ice Vols as they dominated the control of the puck and had remarkable saves by goalie B.J. Keyes.

Joe Williams got Tennessee on the scoreboard six minutes in and Tommy Morgan added another goal three minutes later put the team up 2-0 after one period.

The second period started well for the Vols as well when Williams netted his second goal of the game nearly two minutes in. Northwood then caught fire and responded with three straight goals in a five minute span to tie up the game.

Williams quickly responded with his third goal of the game to regain the lead. However, it was short lived as Northwood tied the game three minutes later.

Tennessee was able to get momentum back in its favor with several shots on a powerplay but was unable to score. However, Tennessee was able to finish the second period with an advantage when Kevin Jones scored on a one-time goal from Williams with 20 seconds left.

The third period was provided back and forth action with neither team able to gain control. Jones scored his second goal of the game on a pass from Benner to give Tennessee a two-goal lead seven minutes into the period.

Northwood was able to score six minutes later bring the game back to a one-goal difference setting up the storybook ending for Benner.

With 40 seconds to go and the Northwood goalie pulled for an extra skater in hopes of getting a goal to tie the game, a loose puck bounced to Benner behind the Northwood defense. He was able to easily place the puck in the net to score the insurance goal for the Vols and end his career.

Fellow Vol senior Chris Bouchard had assists on two of Williams' goals. Brad Holt was the thirdsenior for Tennessee and broke up several Northwood scoring chances and helped set up a goal but did not earn a point.

The win gives Tennessee ninth place overall at the National Championships. However, the Vols were one of four teams to finish 3-1 at the tournament, with only one team, California University of Pennsylvania, going 4-0 and winning the championship.

San Diego State, the team who handed Tennessee the 5-3 loss in game one, finished second overall in the tournament to help build Tennessee's case for being one of the strongest teams at the tournament.

Congratulations to the Ice Vols! As a former goaltender Ice Vol it is fantastic to see that as a club sport Tennessee is competitive on a national basis. Maybe it is time to make ice hockey a scholorship sport and put ice in Stokley Athletic Center. Go Vols!
