The Tennsee Ice Vols trio of Joe Williams, Jon Benner and Kevin Jones combined for seven goals to lead Tennessee to an 8-4 win over Saginaw Valley State in the third round of the ACHA Division III National tournament Friday morning.

The Ice Vols used five unanswered goals in the third period to claim the win and out shot the Cardinals 39-25.

After a quick goal in the first period by the Cardinals, Tennessee answered back with its own goal when Williams scored his third goal of the tournament to even the score.

Tommy Morgan scored his third goal of the week to give the Vols the lead early in the second. However, the lead was short lived as Chris McGuire and Johnathan Tibaudo scored to regain the lead for the Cardinals.

The teams traded powerplay goals late in the second when Benner got his third goal of the tournament to tie the game and the Cardinals answered right back with a goal by Matt Fogal for a 4-3 lead.

Benner scored his second goal of the game while the Ice Vols were shorthanded in the beginning of the third period to tie the game. Five minutes later Kevin Jones scored the game-winning goal from Chris Neilson and Amin Elaguizy.

Neilson finished with three assists for the game.

Joe Williams added two insurance markers later in the third to give him a hat trick for the game and a team-leading five goals in the tournament. Williams also had two assists in the game.

Jones capped the scoring off with an empty-net goal to give Tennessee the 8-4 win.

Tennessee goalie Joe Gauvin was the third different starter in net for UT in the tournament and finished with 21 saves in the contest.

The win advances Tennessee to the ninth-place game tomorrow night at 6:30 and will play Northwood University in the final game of the consolation bracket. Northwood beat Calvin College 6-2 to advance to the game.

Northwood beat Tennessee 5-4 in an overtime game earlier this season in the Northwood Tournament.
