Joe Williams led the team with two goals as Tennessee picked up a 5–3 win over Fairfield University for the Ice Vols first victory of the 2008 ACHA Division III National tournament.
Fairfield got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Justin Eisner 3:45 into the first period. Tennessee, on the other hand, failed to score in the period despite firing 20 shots on goal.
Chris Neilson's goal tied the game at 1–1 less than a minute into the second period on assists from Kevin Jones and Jon Benner.
Tennessee continued to put pressure on the Fairfield defense and kept the pressure off goalie B.J. Keyes in the second period allowing only three shots on goal.
Tommy Morgan scored on a pass from Williams late in the period to give UT its first lead of the tournament at 2–1.
Williams picked up his first goal of the game 5:16 into the third with a steal and remarkable show of puck control as he moved the puck around the goalie and into an open net.
However, Fairfield answered less than a minute later on a goal from Jimmy Colline to cut the Ice Vols' lead back to one at 3–2.
Williams scored his second goal of the game with a powerplay marker from Jones and Chris Bouchard two minutes later to regain Tennessee's two-goal lead.
Fairfield was able to score on a powerplay with under 30 seconds to play, but all hopes of a comeback were taken away when Jones scored an empty net goal with three seconds remaining.
Jones, Williams and Morgan all currently have two goals in the tournament. Jones and Williams also have three assists and are tied for the team's scoring lead.
The next game for the Ice Vols will be at 9 a.m. Friday against the winner of the Dordt College and Saginaw Valley game to be played later today.
The win moves Tennessee into the upper half of the consolation bracket and guarantees a ninth to 12th place finish at the tournament, meaning the Ice Vols will improve on last year's 13th place finish at the National Championships.
