The Tennessee Volunteers have proven to have a flair for the dramatic through the opening part of their 2008 baseball season.
The Vols (9-4) fought off a ninth-inning rally for the second time in four days to beat the Presbyterian College Blue Hose 8-7, Wednesday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Tanner Moore played the role of the hero this time, lining a double into the right-center field ally for the game winning RBI in the tenth inning.
"We obviously didn't play like we did yesterday, but trying to be positive, we did comeback," said coach Todd Raleigh after win. "We had every chance not to. We pushed our way out of some jams. I'm happy we're learning how to fight."
The Blue Hose did their share of fighting as well, rallying from an early 5-0 deficit to send the game into extra innings on Steven Henry's RBI single in the top of the ninth.
Presbyterian looked in pristine position to get the win in the last inning when Robert Anders hit a fly ball to right field with the bases loaded. However, Tennessee's Josh Liles had other plans.
Liles caught the towering fly ball and threw a strike to home plate in time to throw out the tagging Blue Hose runner and end the Presbyterian half of the ninth.
The Vols used the momentum from the Liles throw to load the bases in the bottom half of the frame with two singles and an intentional walk. Yan Gomes then came to the plate and soured the Vols chances by grounding into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Reliever Aaron Everett sat the Blue Hose batters down in order, setting the stage for another extra-inning victory for his team.
Jeff Lockwood led off the bottom of the tenth with a single to right field before Liles struck out. Moore then sent a deep fly ball into the centerfield wall for the walk-off RBI.
Kentrail Davis and Shawn Griffin combined for eight hits in eight at bats. Davis, the Vols offensive leader, was 4-4 with a run scored. The freshman now leads the team with 18 hits. Griffin, who entered the game batting .280, also went 4-4 from the plate with three RBI's and a run scored.
"I had a pretty good day," Griffin said. "The real story was Danny Wiltz, and Aaron Everett coming in and being the band-aids and stopping the bleeding for us."
Six Volunteer pitchers saw action saw action during the game with Everett picking up the win for his two innings of work to end the game.
Starter Zane Stone went four innings without giving up an earned run on three hits. Stone was hurt by poor defense backing him up as three errors helped Presbyterian score two runs.
The Presbyterian rally included two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning to gain a 6-5 lead. The one-run loss to an SEC opponent was the second of the week for the Blue Hose. They lost on Monday to nationally-ranked South Carolina in 10 innings.
Tennessee puts its season long, five-game win streak on the line this weekend when LSU comes to Lindsey Nelson Stadium for a three-game series to begin SEC play. Game time Friday is 7 p.m. with Steve Crnkovich (3-0) scheduled to start for the Vols.
