Let's start off with a little recap. My column last week was devoted to picking the winners of the first 11 conference tournaments.
I picked the winner in seven of those, but in all honesty, what I did wasn't that hard. So far seven 1-seeds and three 2-seeds have claimed the automatic bids to the NCAA tourney.
I will pat myself on the back for picking the biggest upset winner so far correctly. San Diego came through for By my count there are 10 conferences left that will send only one team to the NCAA tournament. Granted, if Memphis drops the Conference USA tournament or Kent State falls in the MAC tourney they will probably still make it to the Big Dance, but I don't see either of those events happening.
Here are my picks for the 10 single-bid conferences. I'll be back later this week to pick the nine big-time conference tournaments.
Northeast: Championship game Wednesday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2
Mount St. Mary's and Sacred Heart each pulled upsets in the semifinals to set up a surprising match-up in the Northeast Conference final. The two teams met in January with Sacred Heart pulling out an eight-point win on the road.
My Pick: I'll take the Mountaineers. "The Mount" has reached 80 points in each of its first two tourney games and has now won seven of its last eight. Look for them to win a close game and probably wind up a 16-seed in the Big Dance.
Big Sky: Championship game Wednesday at 9 p.m. on ESPN2
Portland State and Northern Arizona were the top two teams in the regular season and have advanced into the conference title game just as they were supposed to do. Kyle Landry is averaging nearly 18 points per game on the year for NAU, but he will need some help to overcome PSU’s Deonte Huff and Jeremiah Dominguez.
My Pick: Portland State beat Northern Arizona in both of the team’s meeting last year and was the dominant team in the Big Sky all season. PSU also gets to play the game at home, and I think that will power them to another win.
Patriot League: Championship game Friday at 4:45 p.m. on ESPN2
American claimed the regular season title and the Eagles followed through in the tourney to reach the final. Third-seed Colgate awaits the Eagles for the automatic bid. American won both contests between the teams in the regular season.
My Pick: I usually go against picking a team to beat another three times in a season. However, Colgate only had to beat the sixth and seventh-seeded teams in the conference to get to the final. I've got American by about 10 behind a strong showing from Garrison Carr.
Conference USA: Championship game Saturday at 11:30 a.m. on MyVLT 2
There's really only two games that would matter in this entire tournament. A semifinal match-up between UAB and Houston would probably be a play-in game for the NCAA tournament, with the winner likely also needing a win over Memphis in the final to make the field.
My Pick: Never. Gonna. Happen. The tournament is in Memphis, and the Tigers will win every game by at least 15 points to sew up a one-seed.
America East: Championship game Saturday at Noon on ESPN2
This conference held its semifinals on Sunday and takes almost a week off before playing the final. The regular season's top two teams will match-up in the contest, Maryland-Baltimore County and Hartford. The two teams split the regular season series with each team winning at home by a single point.
My Pick: This game will probably be worth watching since the teams are so evenly matched. Neither team has any championship experience, but UMBC does feature three senior impact players who I think will decide this one.
MAC: Championship game Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2
Kent State enters the MAC Tourney as the top seed and a strong at-large candidate for the Big Dance as long as it doesn’t suffer a loss prior to the semifinals. Ohio or Miami (Ohio) could push the Golden Flashes in the semis, and a finals match-up between KSU and either Akron or Western Michigan would be fun to watch.
My Pick: No big surprises here. Kent State will get to the finals and play the Akron-Western Michigan winner. I like Akron to get by WMU and then push Kent State to the limit in the final. However, the Golden Flashes still ultimately come out on top and become a top candidate to wear the glass slipper.
MEAC: Championship game Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPN Classic
Morgan State claimed the regular season MEAC title with a 15-2 conference record. The two losses each came on the road with one at Florida A&M and the other at Norfolk State. Hampton finished second behind MSU in the regular season.
My Pick: All signs point to Morgan State claiming this one. I’ll give Norfolk State the nod to get to the final before falling just short of the Big Dance.
SWAC: Championship game Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPNU
Alabama State won the regular season crown by a comfortable margin and was the only team to win over half its games overall. The Hornets enter the tourney with five straight wins and are the heavy favorite to snag the automatic bid. Mississippi Valley State and Jackson State each beat ASU in the regular season and are potential opponents for the Hornets after the quarterfinals.
My Pick: I’ll be honest. I know next to nothing about this conference. Whoever wins it will probably be a 16-seed, especially if anyone but Alabama State takes the crown. I think the Hornets will win it, though.
Big West: Championship game Saturday at 11 p.m. on ESPN2
UC Santa Barbara, Cal St. Fullerton and Cal State Northridge all finished tied at 12-4 atop the Big West, with Pacific finishing one game behind the trio. Defending champion Long Beach State struggled to a 3-13 conference mark this year
My Pick: UCSB and Northridge each have byes into the semifinals. Look for UCSB to use its fresh legs and get past Pacific in the semis. However, Northridge struggled some down the stretch, so I like Fullerton to advance to the final and then upset the Gauchos.
Southland: Championship game Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN2
Stephen F. Austin is the top seed in the tournament after impressive season that included a win at Oklahoma. Lamar and Sam Houston State each finished with double-digit conference wins and are the likeliest teams to upset the Lumberjacks.
My Pick: When a team from a small conference like this has a win over a major-conference team you have to take notice. Stephen F. Austin beat Oklahoma and has been the best team in this conference all year. They’ll prove that this weekend.
