Human urges mirror animals

Does this remind you of a significant other's animalistic instincts?

Here is to kissing February goodbye. Valentine's Day is over and with it, all the allusions of love. Back to reality girls: Men are cows.

At least that is the opinion of Jane Goodale, played by Ashley Judd, in the classic chick-flick "Someone Like You."   Is there any truth in this philosophy? Can men be reduced to animals?

In the movie, Judd's character believes she has found Mr. Right, played by Greg Kinnear, but just as the relationship heads toward a commitment, Mr. Right bails on her. Sound familiar ladies?

Jane is left confused and single again. In her rebound stage, she turns her excess energy into a research project. She begins seeking answers to questions of why men act the way they do.

With a broken heart, she turns to any philosophy that can supply some answers. Her conclusion is men are like cows. They act upon simple animal urges, moving from one mate to the next, and depending upon mating season.

If men are cows, then so are women. Is there any truth behind this philosophy?

"Men are not like animals. They are capable of independent thought, which separates humans from animals," Jessica Harrison, freshmen in business pre-major, said.  Obviously, it is superficial to only see the one side of man, but it is undeniable that it does exist.

Sara Martin, sophomore at Gainesville State College, said, "At some level, we all give into our hormonal instincts like animals." If men are cows, then so are women. The fact is that no one can be pinned down to only one word.

We all share these desires.  It is the extent to which we give into them that distinguishes one individual from another.

The truth is people are multifaceted. We have all known the stereotypical male: a charming womanizer. As the traditional saying goes, "They only want one thing."

Yet, no matter how much we may dislike men at any given point because of personal reasons (i.e. breakup, betrayal etc.), there are always exceptions.

To some extent, we are all slaves to our primordial urges. In the movie "Someone Like You," Eddie is Jane's womanizer co-worker. Eddie, played by Hugh Jackman, makes the parade of women in and out of his apartment less shocking.

Although realistically, there are only a few men out there that can reel in that many women on a regular basis. However, at the end of the movie, you realize even men like Eddie are destined to find one mate.

We may be slaves to our desires at times, but evolution has endowed us with intelligence to give us self-control. Primitive instincts are a natural part of life. It is when they consume your daily schedule that issues arise.

Life is a constant struggle to find equilibrium between your wants and needs. There are no easy answers and only harder questions on the journey of life. But, who knows what March may bring?
