Five under-the-radar teams at Tennessee were in action over the weekend, while another team on campus earned several honors following a tournament last week. Overall, it was another very solid weekend for every team at UT.

Vols' Golf: The ninth-ranked Vols' golf team finished second in the USC Collegiate Invitational at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., after a hard charge over the final 18 holes Tuesday. The Vols' were in seventh place following the opening 36 holes Monday. However, a 1-over-par 285 put the team back in contention before No. 7 USC took the title by four strokes. The Vols and Trojans were two of four teams in the tournament ranked in Golfweek's top 10. The other ranked teams were No. 5 UCLA and No. 8 Stanford.

Vols' Tennis: The No. 14 Vols' tennis team defeated Mississippi State at home Sunday after losing for the first time this season against No. 4 Ole Miss Friday. The Rebels defeated the Vols 4-3 as UT lost the doubles point for the first time this season to provide the difference in the match after the six singles' matches were split. UT bounced back with a 5-2 win over the Bulldogs to even its conference record at 1-1.

Vols' Track & Field: The Tennessee track team finished third at the SEC Indoor Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. The Vols were the highest Eastern Division team in the final standings with 99.5 points. Team captain Michael Hogue won his third consecutive indoor pole vault title with a season-best clearance of 17-6 ¼. The victory added to Tennessee's dominant trend in the pole vault, as it was UT's fifth consecutive SEC pole vault title. Rubin Williams and Evander Wells automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship in the 200.

Vols' Swimming & Diving: Seven Tennessee swimmers were named to All-Southeastern Conference teams last week. Nolan Morrell, Jonas Persson, Andrew Thirlwell and Michael Wolfe earned spots on the All-SEC first team. Barry Murphy, Octavio Alesi and Michael DeRocco were named to the second team.

Lady Vols' Tennis: The No. 23 Lady Vols' tennis squad swept its pair of matches this weekend with wins over Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Tennessee defeated the Rebels 4-3 Friday by winning the final two matches of the day after falling behind 3-2. UT kept the momentum going with a 5-2 win at Mississippi State Sunday to close out a six-match road trip with a 4-2 record.

Lady Vols' Swimming & Diving: Eight Lady Vols competed at the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga. with sophomore Jamie Saffer providing a great performance. Saffer swam an NCAA qualifying cut for the first time in her career with a 1:01.81 in the 100y breaststroke. The time is the third fastest in Lady Vol history. Brittany Nauta, Morgan Farrell, Bryttany Curran and Tricia Weaner all posted NCAA qualifying times in the event as well.

  • Lady Vols' softball travels to Alabama for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday.
