The Tennessee baseball team started off the weekend with a huge upset Friday before faltering both Saturday and Sunday at the Houston College Classic this weekend.
The Vols opened the tournament with a 5-4 win over the third-ranked Texas Longhorns on Friday in the "Battle of the UTs" behind solid performances from a pair of newcomers.
Freshman Kentrail Davis had two RBIs to lead the Vols offensively, while transfer Steve Crnkovich picked up the win for Tennessee. Crnkovich had three strikeouts and allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk in 6 1/3 innings pitched. Closer Jeff Lockwood picked up the save.
Tennessee then struggled offensively the rest of the weekend, losing to Texas Tech on Saturday and Oklahoma on Sunday.
Texas Tech jumped out to an early lead against the Vols and held on for a 7-3 win. Cody Brown had two RBIs for the Vols. However, sophomore Nick Hernandez took the loss by allowing four earned runs and only had one strikeout in 4 2/3 innings pitched.
The Vols were nearly held without a hit against Oklahoma, as the Sooners shutout the Diamond Vols, 2-0. Jeff Lockwood and Tanner Moore had hits in the fifth inning but that was all the Vols could produce with the bats.
Bryan Morgado struck out 10 batters in eight innings and allowed only one earned run on five hits. The redshirt freshman already has 22 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched through two starts this season.
The Vols (4-3) return to action Wednesday in Knoxville against James Madison before a three-game, weekend series against Eastern Michigan.
