The Mayor's UT Student Advisory Board would like for students to come to "Discover Downtown" and familiarize themselves with the Market Square and Gay Street area on April 10, 2008.
Students will be given a map of the area, which mark local businesses providing discounts and other promotions that night. Students will then be offered a walking tour to see local shops, restaurants, and entertainment.
"We want to encourage students to see downtown as part of their neighborhood and come see what the city has to offer," one of the assistants to Mayor Haslam and head of the board explained.
"Discover Downtown" will occur one week before "Sundown in the City", a free outdoor concert series in Market Square. This will help kick off "Sundown" and allow students to become better acquainted with the vicinity.
"The downtown area has really developed in the past few years, and by attending ‘Discover Downtown' students will be able to experience this change and continue coming back," Natasa Zivanovic, a UT student who is part of the Mayor's Board said.
Businesses participating will stay open later and offer special promotions. There will also be transportation provided to and from the event for students on campus. Details and plans are still being formulated for "Discover Downtown". The name of the event is subject to change, but keep on the look out for more details as the time draws near.
