"Just keep swimming," a popular motto heard by spectators gathered in the University of Tennessee's Student Aquatics Center Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28. More than 700 Tennessee high school students competed in the championship meet.
Competition was in the air as local rivals took to the starting blocks and diving boards to see what each was made of. Farragut High School became victorious over Bearden and Webb School of Knoxville by a staggering 100 points.
The diving portion of the meet took place Friday night. Brent Sterling of Central High School placed first in the boy's event, and Skye Sanders from South-Doyle won it for the girls.
The swimmer's ages ranged from freshmen to seniors. Knoxville Catholic High School's John Paul Gaylor was the only freshman to win an event. According to Gaylor, winning the 500-yard freestyle felt good. "It's cool to be one of the younger ones to win a race," he said.
Records were broken as the swimmers made the most of their competition. Those who witnessed this meet knew they saw something special. The competition was fierce and an athletic spectacle was displayed.
