Police are looking for a gunman who shot a student in the 1200 block of Laurel Avenue Thursday night.
The gunman approached the 24-year-old student at approximately 9:45 p.m. and demanded his money. After the student refused, the robber shot him in the arm with a small-caliber handgun.
The student, who police said did not suffer life-threatening injuries, was taken to UT Medical Center.
The UT Police Department sent a text message to students via the UT ALERT system at 10:42 p.m. informing them that a person with a gun was seen in the 1200 block of Laurel Avenue. At 11:38 p.m., another message was sent saying that more detailed information was available on the UTPD Web site.
The student's description of the suspect is available on the Web site. He is described as a black male, 5 feet 11 inches tall, wearing a white hooded sweatshirt, jeans and tennis shoes.
Police officers are currently searching the area and asks anyone with information to contact UTPD at (865) 974-3114 or Knoxville Police at 215-7000. More details to come.
Update
The Knoxville News Sentinel reported this afternoon that the student handed over his cash when threatened with the pistol, but refused to hand over his debit card. After a brief scuffle, the robber shot the victim in the arm.
UTPD Capt. Keith Lambert said, "We always recommend that a person comply with an armed suspect when only property is involved. There is no property that cannot be replaced or that is worth risking your life. We recommend that you give an armed suspect your property as you are moving away from the suspect."

Well, in Virginia the armed robbers are black males wearing black hooded sweatshirts. Guess that's how you can tell a Volunteer robber from a Cavalier robber, by the color of their hoodies!!
