I'm so tired of hearing young voters whine about their vote not counting and how politicians don't pay attention to us. Young voters, I'll let you in on a little secret. The youth vote doesn't count. Want to know why? Perhaps, it is because young voters don't vote.
Statistics show that voters between the ages of 18 and 24 consistently have the lowest voter turnout. So why should politicians put in tons of time and money to focus on a group that refuses to vote? You can argue that the whole situation is cyclical and there will never be a resolution, but once again I'm saying you're wrong.
Young voters have a tremendous amount of power, they just don't utilize it. If the majority of young voters showed up at the polls, the last couple of presidential terms would have probably went a little differently. Also, if young voters made use of their power, politicians would have no choice but to listen; politicians would have no choice but put in the time and effort to reach out to young people.
I really think that the United States' youth fail to understand how many issues apply to them, for their lives right now and in the future. There are college scholarships, the draft, the drinking age, the driving age, Social Security, and economic issues that affect all of us whether we'd like to admit it or not.
So do yourself and your fellow young voters a favor: Go vote. It really isn't hard. Get registered. Find out who's running and what their stance is. Then find a place with voting booths, push a couple of buttons and cast your vote.
