How did you spend your Martin Luther King Jr. holiday? It was an extra day off from school for more sleep, last minute studying and even time to hang with friends. However, is that what this holiday was supposedly reserved for?
It cannot be said that everyday I live my life to make a difference for all those coming behind me. However, this is what King did once he took a stance against Jim Crow laws. The least we can do, for one day, is attempt an act of kindness that could benefit the human race.
His dreams can live in everyone, everyday. So you missed out this Martin Luther King Jr. Day on doing that one special thing. It doesn't mean you have to wait until next January to make your mark. Any day out of the year can be designated to doing your part in making King's dream a reality. This doesn't mean you have to go march on Washington. You can get the job done by doing small acts of kindness.
The small things are the ones that matter most in life. They are the things no one forgets. I did a small thing by going to a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. It was in the UC Auditorium and was very beneficial. People of all ethnicities came out to celebrate his life and the things he did for everyone. I was not in the stage center for the world to see, but I did my part.
Some may think, ‘What did King do for me? It's not like he affected my race.' That is wrong. King wanted equality for all. He wanted everyone to be able to enjoy the same perks of being American. That meant integrating and working together to better our country and ourselves.
His dreams can live in everyone, everyday. We shouldn't restrict it to only one day of the year, or one month. People are willing to fight for equal rights everyday; we can do our part by taking advantage of the rights we do have.
So next time one thinks of Martin Luther King Jr. Day or his dream, don't try to cram good deeds into the day reserved to celebrate his being a great leader. It is my belief that everyday should be geared toward assisting ourselves as well as others in need, even if it's holding the door open for someone. We seem to forget those who held the door open for us so we can be where we are today.
