While the Tennessee basketball teams won their games this week, several other Vols teams had strong performances as well.
- Smokey: Smokey won the Mascot National Championship on Friday evening at the Universal Cheerleading Association National Championships at Walt Disney World. Smokey outperformed Wisconsin's Buck the Badger and Auburn's Aubie to win his third national championship.
- Vols Swimming and Diving: The sixth ranked Aqua Vols lossed their first match of the year on Friday to the seventh ranked Indiana Hoosiers 166 – 134. Geoffrey Sanders led UT with wins in the 500-yard freestyle and 1000-yard freestyle.
- Vols Track and Field: The men's track and field team helped the SEC win the Big 10-SEC Challenge at Indiana 187 – 156. No Vols won any of the events. However, Samdi Fraser finished second in the 400 with a 48.42 and Yarrick Kincaid finished second in the 800 with a 1:53.58. Nick Panezich threw personal-best 35-lb. weight throw of 59–10 ¼, which moved him to 10th on Tennessee's all-time performance list.
- Vols Tennis: J.P. Smith, currently ranked No. 93, upset No. 48 Robby Poole of Ole Miss, No. 88 Jan Zelezny of LSU and No. 8 Greg Ouellette of Florida to advance to the semi-finals of Flight A of the 2008 SEC Coaches Indoor Championship. Jeremy Tweedt advanced to the semi-finals of Flight B. Both lost in the semi-finals.
- Lady Vols Swimming and Diving: The sixth-ranked Lady Vols swimming and diving team beat Indiana 172 – 128 on Friday. Carly Mathes led all Lady Vols with three individual wins. Mathes won the 200 freestyle, the 100 freestyle, and the 200 medley. Mathes also was part of the 400 relay team which won as well.
- Lady Vols Tennis: The No. 22 Lady Vols won their first match of the year. UT dominated MTSU on Friday, winning all six singles matches and all three doubles matches.
This Week
- The men's tennis team will host The Citadel and Furman on Thursday. To finish the week, the Vols will also host ETSU and UNC Wilmington on Sunday.
- The Lady Vols tennis team will host North Carolina on Monday. They will host Illinois on Saturday and Purdue on Sunday.
- The Vols and Lady Vols track and field teams will be back in action on Friday and Saturday at the Penn State National.
- The Vols and Lady Vols swimming and diving teams will play Georgia on Saturday.
