On Jan. 19, hundreds will run five kilometers or walk one mile in an effort to benefit the YWCA through the 2008 Race Against Racism.
The race will be held at the Phyllis Wheatley Center located at 124 S. Cruze St. in Knoxville. The registration and check-in will begin at 11:30 a.m. and last until 12:45 p.m. with the race beginning at 1 p.m. Entertainment before the race will also be provided.
The registration fee for a team of five or more is $15 per person. Individual people may register at a fee of $25 with a registration fee of $12 for those under 15.
The 2008 Race Against Racism brings the issue of racism and the awareness of how our community can come together to the forefront of our everyday life. The YWCA The awards presentation will occur at 1:45 p.m. Awards will be given out in many different categories including:
- Overall 1st place male and female
- Masters (40+) 1st place male and female
- Grandmasters (50+) 1st place male and female
- Athena, 1st place female
- Clydesdal, 1st place male
- Wheelchair
- Largest Team
There will also be awards given out for the different age groups.
"The 2008 Race Against Racism brings the issue of racism and the awareness of how our community can come together to the forefront of our everyday life," said the YWCA Web site.
Registration is available through the YWCA Web site or by going to the YWCA Knoxville located at 420 W. Clinch Ave.

Why are you engaged in a ridiculous crusade against "racism"? People are really getting tired of being constantly hectored about race, diversity, multiculturalism, etc. It's almost like enduring repeated blasts of the infamous "Two Minutes Of Hate" in George Orwell's "1984". You're actually laying the foundation for a huge backlash. In fact, you're actually helping to spawn white racial consciousness (which may not be a bad thing, and which is actually a valid defensive response against growing anti-white racism from the black and latino communities).
Why not have a race for a truly worthwhile cause, like against child abuse, or Alzheimer's disease, or homelessness? Tangible, quantifiable problems with a reasonable expectation of a solution. We have homeless vets on America's streets - folks who waged Uncle Sam's imperial wars all over the world, who were wounded one way or another, and all you care about is "racism". The reality of the situation is that 85% of whites are killed by members of their own race, and 93% of blacks are killed by blacks. Violent crime in the black community primarily directly affects... people in the black community. The Christian/Newsome murders were a tragedy, but your fears might not be that well grounded overall.

As far as racism in Knoxville, why wouldn't any media run the videotape of a Black cop and a Black family burning a cross in the front yard of a white man and his family? I saw the video and took it around town personally and no one would touch it. The media is afraid of pissing off advertisers. It's not about color unless the color is green.
